"I intend to draw from my experiences of life and art an idyllic network: a community of artists, creatives ressources and ideas that bring out symbolic issues concerning all lifeform on Earth towards the third millenium"

International artist and emerging performer, Alex Côté creates a contemporary imagery of body, landscape and plastic that unfolds with meditation, contemplation and collective awareness. His work seeks to awaken the primitive soul, the earthly roots and the spiritual connection that bind humans to nature, while soliciting the senses of the viewer and creating sacred aesthetics with the performers. Throughout workshops, residencies, festivals and exhibitions, Alex Côté's creative process has been evolving within the fields of theatre, performance, photography, video, mapping, installation, site-specific and land art. He has shown his work in Berlin, Venice, Rome, New York, Portugal, Poland, Spain, France, and recently in Montréal as a guest-artist VJ for the Nocturnes of the Museum of Contemporary Art. Invited by DeSerres and The Artist Project, he took part of the last Toronto Art Fair 2019 with his contemporary collection of photography. Finally, Alex Côté performed during the Festival International Art of Performance (FIAP) in Martinique in November, in addition to present video performances at Satellite Art Show by Performance is Alive during Miami Art Basel and Let's Dance International Frontiers by Serendipity in United Kingdom.  Supported by Montreal & Quebec Arts Councils, he was curating the exhibition and performance WATER.sync at Livart Montreal and at Maison de la Culture Pointe-aux-Trembles. In march 2022, he was inaugurating a public art installation for the permanent collection of the Aquarium du Québec made out of 2000 plastic pieces removed from the shores and water of St-Lawrence River.

LGBTQIA2+ artist Alex Côté transposes in-situ performances into photographic and videographic works where an idyllic, organic and primitive world disappears as the environmental imprint darkens. His works reveal an interdisciplinary dialogue inspired by the transgression of natural space and the mimicry of the body, between erasure and appropriation, suffocation and meditation.

Alex Côté's works are the result of an environmental intention, a site-specific approach and the collaboration of around thirty artists from all over the world. He creates an interdisciplinary aesthetic driven by the desire for an idyllic world, in which being fully experiences his nature. Between photography, video, performance and land art, his process explores the current transformations of the Earth in the era of the environmental crises of the Anthropocene.

The intervention of plastic becomes a living representation of the distance between the environment and our colonized perception of beauty. The nudity of the performers invites a vulnerability, while the neutrality of the body and gender refers to the queer and harmonic nature of the landscape. His contemporary imagery unfolds in the movement of bodies, landscapes and plastics between contemplation and consciousness.

His work seeks to reconnect with the primitive spirit, the roots and the spiritual connection of the human. An aesthetic duality thus arises from a plastic presence that is both contemplative and suffocating, from a nature that is sometimes idyllic, sometimes hostile, and from embodied or completely erased bodies.
